Flora-Bama Mullet Toss: Fishy Fun on Florida's Perdido Key

Flora-Bama Mullet Toss contestant and onlookers on the beachIf you think a mullet is just a bad haircut, you probably haven’t heard about the Flora-Bama Lounge’s Annual Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party. Centerpiece of this tongue-in-cheek Perdido Key event is a strange but satisfying three-day competition. It involves tossing a mullet  – a small fish that’s found in abundance in local waters –  from a 10-foot circle on the beach in Florida across the state line into Alabama. Tosses of more than 150 feet have been recorded for the winners. At the event’s end, organizers donate the Mullets to Alligator Alley (frozen, not fresh) in Summerdale to feed the gators.

The stage is ready, set, go for the 2021 Flora-Bama Mullet Toss, April 23-25. The fun starts at 10 a.m. each day for kids, and noon to 4 p.m. daily for adults. The cost for the privilege of tossing a mullet is $15 per person, and all contestants receive an Interstate Mullet Toss T-shirt. The event is cash only, but there are plenty of ATMs onsite.

Finals will be held all three days at 4:30 p.m., and winners will be announced daily in each category. (Categories are based on age and gender.) Local celebrities will also come out daily at 4 p.m. to toss a few fish, but won’t be eligible for prizes.

Proceeds from the Mullet Toss, which average around $40,000 each year, benefit the Community Drug and Alcohol Council, Inc., local boys’ and girls’ clubs, and youth groups on both the Alabama and Florida sides of the line.
