Walks on the Wild Side Explore the Alabama Gulf Coast

The mild days of winter are ideal for exploring nature along the Alabama Gulf Coast. And the park rangers at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge in Gulf Shores are offering guided walks for visitors who’d like to learn about the natural history of the area. The themed walks, scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week from January 28 through March 6, include a Bird Walk, Nature Hike, and Dynamic Dunes Beach Tour. The Bird Walk is geared to all ages and is for both beginning and experienced bird watchers. The Dynamic Dunes Tour will explore the beach and dunes. Participants in the Nature Hike will learn about the ecology, plants, and wildlife of Alabama’s coastal wetlands. There is no charge for the walks, but reservations are required, and 24 hours’ notice is requested for cancellations. The one- to two-hour walks are limited to 12 people each. For more information and to sign up for a walk, contact Park Ranger Denise McInturff at 251-540-7720 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To learn more about Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, visit the refuge’s Web site at http://www.fws.gov/bonsecour. With off-season rates and fewer crowds, winter is the perfect time to visit the Alabama Gulf Coast.
