History Comes Alive This Summer at Fort Morgan
Watch the past come alive this summer during the annual Twilight Tours of Fort Morgan. Located at the tip of the Fort Morgan Peninsula, near Gulf Shores, the 19th-century fort was built to guard the entrance to the main ship channel into Mobile Bay. Completed in 1834, Fort Morgan was active during four wars - the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World Wars I and II. The theme for this year’s Twilight Tours, scheduled for Tuesday nights in June and July, is the Civil War in 1863. This was the year before Admiral David Farragut led his Union fleet into Mobile Bay, capturing the fort and helping deal a death blow to the Confederacy. Fort Morgan will also host a Salute to American Independence on Thursday, July 4. There will be Civil War weapons demonstrations and artillery firings to celebrate the day, and uniformed interpreters representing different periods of the fort’s history will conduct special tours. Hours for the Independence Day event are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday, August 23, a mock battle will be staged to commemorate the 149th anniversary of the Battle of Mobile Bay and Siege of Fort Morgan. Hours for the daylong celebration are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, and to confirm dates and times of scheduled events, please call 251-540-5257. The events are included in the price of admission to the fort.
