Stroll Into the Past at Fort Pickens

58542-fortpickens51-h Costumed interpreters and the lights of hundreds of candles will bring the past alive at Fort Pickens during “A Candlelight Tour of Fort Pickens” on Saturday, February 9. The largest of four forts built in the mid-1800s to defend Pensacola Bay and its navy yard, Fort Pickens was also one of only four bastions in the South never to be occupied by Confederate forces during the Civil War. It is the Civil War era that will be re-created during the free hour-long tour, which will start every 15 minutes (5 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.) from the Fort Pickens Visitor Center. Each tour is limited to 30 visitors, so reservations are required, and guests are asked to arrive 20 minutes before their assigned tour time. Comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended. Guests are also welcome to bring their own flashlights. For more information and to make reservations, call 850-934-2600 or go to www.nps.gov/guis. Fort Pickens is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore.
