Free Tours for Nature Lovers
Winter is a great time to get up close and personal with nature along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Mild temperatures and lots of sunny days make being outdoors a pleasure. And when you sign up for one of the tours offered by Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, you’ll have an exciting learning experience as well. According to Park Ranger Denise McInturff, the tours are scheduled every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday through February 28 and include a bird walk, a Dynamic Dunes Tour, and a nature walk. The bird walk, which is geared to all ages and both beginning and experienced bird watchers, will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Visitors wanting to know more about the shore will enjoy the Dynamic Dunes Tour, scheduled for every Thursday. The plants, history, ecology, and wildlife of the refuge are the topics of the guided nature walks, scheduled for all three days. Each tour, which lasts from one to two hours, is limited to 12 people. There is no charge, but reservations are required, with 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. For a tour schedule, go to bonsecour.fws.gov. To sign up for a tour, call McInturff at 251-540-7720, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30.p.m. With off-season rates and fewer crowds, winter is the perfect time to visit the Alabama Gulf Coast.
