More Than a Fishing Tale – Flora-Bama Hosts 28th Annual Interstate Mullet Toss
If you think a mullet is just a bad haircut, you probably havenât heard about the Flora-Bama Loungeâs Annual Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coastâs Greatest Beach Party. Centerpiece of the Perdido Key event is a three-day competition that involves tossing a mullet Ââ a small fish found in abundance in local waters â from a 10-foot circle on the beach in Alabama across the state line into Florida. Tosses of more than 150 feet have been recorded for the winners. At the eventâs end, organizers feed the mullets to the seagulls.
Over the years, the competition has evolved into a weeklong party, complete with live music, beach games, food, and a bikini contest. This yearâs Interstate Mullet Toss kicks off on Saturday, April 21, with the Flora-Bama Mullet Man Triathlon. It continues on Wednesday, April 25, with the Flora-Bama Mullet Swing Golf Classic. The actual mullet toss begins at noon on Friday, April 27, and at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Proceeds from the Annual Interstate Mullet Toss, which average around $20,000 each year, are donated to local youth charities.
