Chillin’ in the Gulf

58535-polarbeardip4-h The folks at the Flora-Bama have made it a tradition to start off the new year with thrills and chills. Literally. Every New Year’s Day at high noon, crowds of partiers, some in costume and others scantily clad, jump into the chilly (think a temperature in the mid-50s) waters of the Gulf of Mexico during the iconic roadhouse’s Polar Bear Dip. Open to all ages, the free event, billed as a great way to “let the past be the past; wash it all away,” also includes music, drinks, and good food. More than 1,000 people typically participate, and getting wet is optional. The Flora-Bama is located at the Alabama/Florida state line, between Orange Beach and Perdido Key. For places to stay in the area, check out our listings at Orange Beach vacation rentals, Perdido Key vacation rentals, and Gulf Shores vacation rentals. And here’s hoping you have a safe and happy new year!
